John Hoffmann - Executive Vice President of Discovery Channel tells NHN what he wants

John Hoffmann's mantra is refreshing and exciting : "Science is great ! People have BS detectors! And we don’t ever want to underestimate the audience!"

As Discovery Channel's Executive Vice President of Documentaries and Specials since January 2015, he has already made his mark. NHN's Lizzie Green spoke to him about his plans and aspirations, and his drive to put conservation centre stage.

Shark Week 2015: My Faith in the Discovery Channel is Revived! by Chris Palmer

Like many others in the wildlife filmmaking community, I have been highly critical of the Discovery Channel for their shameful record of commissioning programs for Shark Week that do damage to conservation, science, education, and, most egregiously, to sharks themselves.

But this year I want to commend Discovery. Instead of fakery, fearmongering, and animal harassment, there was more science and conservation.

 While still room for improvement (more on that below), I want to commend Rich Ross, the new president

Discovery's Shark Week - encouraging signs of change?

Discovery "needs a bigger boat" to carry all the distortions about sharks that it has presented over 28 years of "Shark Week documentaries." , wrote a disaffected member of the audience, Many marine scientists have been outraged for years about the Discovery's "faked-documentary".  

 

The good news is that the Channel has promised to clean up it's act.

Discovery's Eaten Alive

The Discovery Channel’s overhyped “Eaten Alive” episode Sunday evening disappointed viewers for failing to deliver on its promise to show the ultimate man-versus-nature showdown. The promotional ads boasted that naturalist Paul Rosolie, armed with a “snake-proof suit,” would allow himself to be eaten by an anaconda. But Rosolie did not go into “the belly of the beast.” Nowhere close. He didn’t even get in the anaconda’s jaws.

Discovery Channel Wants Us to Watch a Man Get Eaten By An Anaconda

Did you see the man who let a snake eat him on TV last night? Sounds like a joke, but sadly, it’s real. On Sunday, December 7, Discovery Channel will air Eaten Alive, a show that promises the ultimate man versus nature showdown. Armed with a “snake-proof suit,” naturalist Paul Rosolie will allow himself to be eaten by an anaconda.
