Discovery Channel has commissioned BBC Studios to produce a special on the current state of the world’s wildlife.
The studio’s Natural History Unit will produce The Red list, a two-hour film that follows wildlife conservationists across the world as they compile the latest version of The Red List, the most comprehensive record of Earth’s wildlife which is run by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
The Discovery deal marks BBC Studios first non-BBC commission to date.

The BBC has received 17 Rockie Award nominations at BANFF– more than any other broadcaster.
The 132 nominees come from more than 20 countries, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Winners willbe presented at the Programme Competition Ceremony on Monday June 13 at the BANFF World Media Festival, Canada.

The BBC’s first female Natural History Unit (NHU) boss Wendy Darke has become the latest BBC Studios board member to leave the corporation.
BBC staff were informed of Darke’s departure after 25 years at the NHU via an email from director of television Mark Lindse

Tony Hall has branded BBC Worldwide indivisible from the corporation as he announced plans for a US rival to Netflix, Hulu and Amazon.
Speaking at the Royal Television Society convention in Cambridge, the BBC director-general revealed few details of the OTT service beyond an ambition to offer “BBC fans programmes they wouldn’t otherwise get – showcasing British actors, our programme-makers – and celebrating our culture”.
The BBC has yet to announce the service’s name, pricing or content mix, stating simply that it will offer a mix of ‘fresh and favourites’ not available elsewhere in the US. It is thought that it could strike deals for indie-made content as well as offering archive programming and shows from BBC Productions.

Sweeping changes to the BBC’s factual commissioning are likely to result in the departure of some of the corporation’s highest-profile commissioners. Some may decide to apply for one of three remaining newly created roles (including Head of Specialist Features and Natural History)) as part of a closed process..
There are suggestions that head of history and business, Davidson, could be tempted by the specialist factual post, but there is a view that the broad nature of the three new roles makes it hard for any candidate to demonstrate comprehensive relevant experience.
