BBC documentaries commissioner Charlotte Moore has been handed daytime commissioning responsibilities while a replacement for Liam Keelan is found.

The search for his replacement started in January and a number of likely contenders have already emerged including BBC features and formats commissioner Alison Kirkham and science and natural history commissioner Kim Shillinglaw.

BBC Worldwide is set to increase its investment in original factual content on YouTube, having launched its second Google-backed channel, Head Squeeze, earlier this week.

Wild Pictures hires development exec ahead of scripted move.

Factual producer Wild Pictures, which aims broaden its output into scripted programming & natural history, has promoted Rachel Tierney to Head of Development. Her brief is to find new areas of growth for an indie which has a script in development for a feature. Wild already has 15 hours of commissions from 2012 and expects to double this in next two years. Tierney: “I’m looking forward to building an expanded, creative and dedicated team to build on Wild’s considerable existing success.”.

BBC Vision Set for Shake Up

In new plans to reorganize itself, the BBC is set to radically change the way it works with indies. The BBC plans to improve the speed and effectiveness with which commissioners communicate in a strategy designed to ensure more of the BBC’s spending ends up on the screen. Acting director of Vision, Roger Mosey, said this will mean that commissioners commit to quicker response times and are more mindful of producer needs, such as avoiding cancelling a meeting that a producer is travelling into London to attend.

UKTV is to become one of the first broadcasters to use Twitter-owned video sharing service Vine, as part of their marketing campaign. The broadcaster has used a six second video clip, which it plans to distribute on Twitter ahead of a series. This could be a useful tip for our own community when marketing our shows!

With the World Cup next year and the Olympics four years after that, Brazil is a country on a mission. There is a new ‘gold rush’ in Brazilian television production and there are opportunities aplenty. In this country of roughly 200 million people, cable TV is growing – the message is ‘ we need content’. On offer are generous tax breaks for corporate investment in production, and eye watering funds created specifically for the production sector. The Rio Film Commission has said it will match –fund any production money raised by a Brazilian production company, including co-production money. Broadcasters have increased their quotas for new content produced in Brazil – Discovery Latin America has 100 hours to fill and needs successful co-pros between Brazilian and foreign producers.

Discovery Channel North America launch date announced.

US net Discovery Channel will launch its landmark 7 part natural history series North America, on May 19. The series, produced by Silverback Films, travels from the sub-zero Canadian tundra to the tropical rainforests of Panama, capturing the wildlife and the environment in between. The series also includes a “finale” which reveals the top natural North American destination, selected by online viewers on Discovery’s ‘My North America’ Facebook page. North America’s multi-platform components will include a mobile/web natural history application will be launched to tie in with North America‘s content.

BBC Worldwide held a glittering gala event for its big-budget natural history series Africa at their Showcase trade show in Liverpool last week. Alongside David Attenbourgh’s Africa, the distributor is also betting heavily on its slate of natural history titles including Great Bear Stakeout, and Penguins- Spy in the Huddle. According to sources, the new NHU series Hidden Kingdoms gained a lot of interest and China TV were active buyers of natural history content.
