UWE Graduate Beth Staley finalist for BAFTA LA Awards

2nd July 2020

The BBC Studios Natural History Unit and UWE’s Partnership MA in Wildlife Filmmaking is extremely proud to have another finalist in this year’s International BAFTA LA Awards.

Graduate Beth Staley completed her Masters earlier this year producing her short film Scratching the Surface, an inspiring story showing the way human and animal landmine clearance teams work together.  Beth filmed the extraordinary teamwork as the rats detect TNT and alert their human co-operatives.  She now hopes this prestigious nomination can bring the film a wider audience, raising awareness about the threat landmines in Cambodia and the fantastic work APOPO is doing to combat the threat faced by rural communities.

For MA Programme Leader Peter Venn the film is a wonderful example of how human and animals cooperate, documenting her story as a beautifully crafted and deeply humanist film. We’re hugely indebted to the BBC’s NHU in supporting our MA, and of course hoping that Beth can take us to a second BAFTA win. Mentoring Beth during her production was the NHU’s Chris Kidd, who is also an early graduate from the MA.
