Midnight feast: jaguar filmed hunting turtle in BBC Big Cats television first

15 January 2018

Henry Bodkin, The Telegraph

The jaguar usually hunts in the jungle but was captured visiting the coast in a television first.

It is one of the rarest midnight feasts ever captured on camera.

Under the moonlight on a deserted Costa Rican beach, a pregnant female jaguar, slowed by the weight of the cub inside her, paces at leisure towards prey she knows cannot escape.

What happens next - the culmination of weeks of rough living and patience by a BBC crew - is a television first.

Experience with a variety of different camera tech ( Ronin’s, drones, timelapse etc ) is an advantage, but demonstrating visual creativity and imagination is much more important.

Broadcast credits are an advantage but not essential.

Big cats are among the most widely recognized and admired animals across the globe. However, today these charismatic predators are facing many and varied threats, which are mostly caused by human activities. Overall, their populations are declining at a disturbing rate due to loss of habitat and prey, conflicts with people, poaching and illegal trade.

The Secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival are pleased to join hands again to organize an international film festival, this time for the world’s big cats, to raise global awareness of the critical challenges facing these iconic species.

EXTENDED DEADLINE: January 5, 2018

Winners to be announced at a high-level event to coincide with the global launch of World Wildlife Day at UN Headquarters in NYC, on March 3, 2018.
