We were delighted to welcome Plimsoll Productions’ Creative Director of Natural History, Tom Hugh-Jones to NHN’s meeting this month.

Tom provided insight into the making of Hostile Planet, and the way that conventional British wildlife storytelling approaches were challenged and adapted to create a hybrid natural history series,  which ticked all the right boxes for National Geographic's blue collar American audience.

National Geographic is a respected cable channel that operates in an increasingly “noisy television landscape”. When pitching and producing to such channels it is essential to understand their audiences, brand and needs.

Offspring Films' 3 way co-pro deal brings global audience to Animals at Play

 Bristol-based production company Offspring Films brings the new natural history series ANIMALS AT PLAY (2 x 60’) to global screens this summer, thanks to the first co-production deal to involve Love Nature 4K, BBC in the UK, and Germany’s public service broadcaster ZDF.

 

Offspring’s two-part ANIMALS AT PLAY series, narrated by Gordon Buchannan, is currently due to premiere on BBC Two in the UK in July before airing on ZDF, in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, in September and in 60+ other countries via Love Nature’s SVOD and linear platforms in addition to the Smithsonian Channel in the

Scottish indie Maramedia to produce international co-production Stormborn

BBC Scotland is one of several co-production partners backing a new blue-chip natural history series for Love Nature 4K.

Scottish indie Maramedia and Screen Scotland are also attached to the 3 x 50 minutes series Stormborn (working title), which will tell the dramatic stories of one breeding year in the wildlands of countries on the edge of the north Atlantic.

Production has begun and will continue until November, focusing on how otters, arctic foxes and reindeer try to make homes, find mates and raise young in harsh conditions. Filming locations include Norway, Iceland and Scotland’s Shetland Islands.

BBC's Countryfile exposes illegal animal trade in eels

Dealers looking to illegally export European eels from the UK have been exposed by BBC Countryfile.

Posing as a UK fisherman who had legally caught the eels on the River Severn in Gloucestershire, presenter Joe Crowley was approached by Chinese and Russian buyers and a UK exporter.

They were prepared to pay up to seven times the normal catch price if the eels could be sent out of the EU.

After the Our Planet walrus sequence gained international media attention, these wonderful animals need to remain the focus of conservationists' attention.

The Walrus is an animal like no other- unique in looks and biology. Males and females spend half the year apart, separated by a vast sea. When they do meet it is to mate but this occurs during the pitch-black polar winter.

CCTV to co-produce latest Attenborough series

The Chinese public broadcaster, CCTV,  is to co-produce the BBC's seven-part series David Attenborough's Seven World's One Planet, which airs later this year. It joins Chinese digital platform Tencent, which has previously been on board via its Tencent Penguin Pictures division and the two companies will broadcast simultaneously.

 

CCTV is the latest co-producer of the BBC series, which is produced by BBC Studios’ Natural History Unit, alongside BBC America, Germany’s ZDF and France Télévisions. The agreement was sealed at BBC Studios’ Natural History and Science Open Day in Bristol, UK.
